[Story behind the City]

Ami lives with her two sons in an old tenement building in Tsuen Wan, a subdivided flat of less than 150 square feet. Recently, Make It Work had the chance to pay them a visit. The building, lacking an elevator, required us to climb the stairs to the fifth floor; we joked that it was fortunate it was not during the sweltering summer months. Within the flat, there was no clear separation between the living room, bedroom, or kitchen areas; all the furniture, appliances, and daily necessities were visible at a single glance. Thankfully, there is a small window that provides a view of the street , allowing for a bit of fresh air. 

Ami’s children are actively taking part in a range of activities in school. As her son is already attending primary school, Ami is able to work part-time as a cleaner to help boost the family’s income. She also attends workshops at Make It Work in her spare time to improve her skills. Despite their less-than-ideal living conditions, Ami’s positive attitude is truly inspiring. After the visit, the two young boys invited us to be their guests again. Hearing this, we smiled knowingly, confident that we were doing the right thing. 

A heartfelt thank you to Ami for welcoming us, which allows us to understand the difficulties and obstacles encountered by grassroots groups. Behind the bustling city , Ami’s story is just the tip of the iceberg. We remain committed to our social responsibility by listening to and addressing the needs of vulnerable communities, helping them overcome their hardships.
