【The perseverance of a single mother】

During the pandemic, single mother Ah Yin had to leave her full-time warehouse position to look after her two children since they were unable to attend school. This turned family income into the main concern. The second issue was that one of her children was recognized as a student with Special Educational Needs. In comparison to typical families, Ah Yin requires greater strength to sustain the family. Fortunately, with assistance from Make It Work and other charitable organizations, she and her children’s situation has improved.

Ah Yin was not content to stay at home and solely rely on other’s assistance; instead, she proactively looked for any part-time opportunities. About 2 months ago, thank you for the job opportunity from French Chamber in Hong Kong, she secured a part-time cleaning position. With over ten years of experience as warehouse staff, she quickly adapted to the cleaning tasks and even organized electrical wires and repaired the flooring, showcasing her sense of responsibility and enthusiasm. Furthermore, Ah Yin participates in volunteer activities in her spare time, helping the elderly and acting as a parent volunteer, with the goal of contributing to the community while enhancing her own life. Her part-time work enhances the family income and also gives her the opportunity to enjoy more quality moments with her children, witnessing their growth.

Thanks to the support of various social welfare organizations, Ah Yin and her children are now residing in transitional housing in Kai Tak, which offers better living conditions compared to their former subdivided flat. She expresses gratitude to those who have helped her. Ah Yin now aims to obtain steady full-time work when her kids grow a little older, while she can also rejoin society. We are happy to offer Ah Yin and her family the chance to achieve self-sufficiency and are eager to create a positive impact for more individuals.
